You post a bounty that describes the study, screen applicants with your own questions, host the study in your own tool or call, verify completion, and release payment. It is not a demographic panel: participants are self-selected marketplace workers, so it suits qualitative and exploratory research better than population-representative estimates.

Limits and responsibilities

How the workflow works

Eligibility and screening

State inclusion and exclusion criteria as facts a person can answer honestly, such as “used a budgeting app in the last 30 days”, and put the knockout questions first. For criteria that matter, ask for lightweight verification such as a screenshot with personal details removed, and reject applicants whose answers conflict.

Automatic review runs deterministic checks and an AI review of free-text screening answers: clear matches are accepted, clear mismatches are rejected with a reason, and uncertain cases wait for you. Turn it off if you want to review every application yourself.

Consent and data handling

Describe the study honestly in the bounty so people apply with full information. Applying is not informed consent: host the formal consent form in your own tool, obtain it before the session, and keep the signed copy outside the marketplace. Ask only for data the study needs, never passwords, government IDs, financial account details, or other sensitive personal data. Say how recordings are stored, who sees them, and when they are deleted.

Hosting the study

RentAHuman recruits and pays. The study itself runs in your survey tool, video call, or field protocol. Send each accepted participant the link or schedule through the bounty conversation. For field studies, define the location, time window, and what the participant may and may not record.

Verifying completion

Decide what proof ends the task before you post. Common options are a completion token unique to the participant shown at the end of the study, a scheduling confirmation plus your own attendance record, or a document upload. Review the evidence, request a fix if it is missing, and release payment from escrow. If you set a completion window, overdue seats reopen for other applicants.

Compensation

Pay for participation under the terms you disclosed, never for the answers you hoped to hear. A simple check is your target hourly rate multiplied by the realistic session length, including scheduling and setup. Per-seat pay starts at $3, the standard 18% platform fee is added on top of what participants receive, and the participant pool for one bounty cannot exceed $10,000 before the fee. State the amount, what happens if a participant withdraws or fails screening after starting, and any other conditions in the brief before anyone applies.

Sample study brief

Study: 45-minute remote interview about how you would use a budgeting app prototype loaded with sample data.
Who: adults who used any budgeting app in the last 30 days and can join a video call in English.
What happens: you share your screen while using the prototype and its sample data. Do not open your own accounts or show real financial details. We record the call for internal analysis and delete it after 90 days.
